Arc of Hope‘ is a community project conceived by Woolenwick Infant and Nursery School at the start of the first lockdown in April 2020.

As the country began to show their appreciation for the NHS by displaying pictures of rainbows in their windows, Woolenwick decided to take this one step further, asking their children to send in selfies and drawings for a rainbow mosaic.

When we were first asked to take on this project, we had no idea that it would become as big as it did. What began as a home-school project, a way to bring the children together digitally, grew as Woolenwick invited submissions from the local schools.

After the initial design ideas and consultations, Arc of Hope took on a life of its own. Once the creative concept was agreed it became a project of logistics, collating and compiling images to fit the design, which was deliberately made simple to accommodate all of the photos. Some 1,400 photos later, we really felt that we were on the verge of something special. The final artwork was an impressive twice AO size and can now be seen in many of the collaborating schools and at the new bus station in Stevenage town centre.
